Jonathan Lear is the John U. Nef Distinguished Service Professor at the Committee on Social Thought and in the Department of Philosophy. His work focuses on the philosophical understanding of the human psyche—and the ethical implications that flow from us being the kind of creatures we are. Jonathan Lear wrote this book with the purpose of coming “to a deeper understanding of Aristotle’s claim that all men by their nature desire to know.” [1] Lear proposes that in order to properly understand Aristotle’s metaphysical inquiry, as it is found in the Metaphysics , one must first grasp Aristotle’s understanding of the way the world is.
